Other small improvements in battery life may be gained by the ability to turn off USB ports individually to save power.

How about not keeping your laptop battery plugged in all the time. Take it out when you are using the power cord.

I think solid State is a hard drive where the storage is stored on flash memory rather than a mechanical device. Solid State hard drives are much much faster in every way than traditional hard drives
